Jackson police have a warning for Kia and Hyundai owners.

"Please do something to help us help you to not be a victim," said Chief Joseph Wade.

Wade said a national trend has come to Jackson. He said thieves are targeting 2011-2021 Kias and Hyundais. Wade said in May, 15 Kias and nine Hyundais were reported stolen in Jackson.

Investigators said thieves are learning how to steal the vehicles through social media.

"It involves a screwdriver and some sort of USB cable," Wade said.

The chief asked Kia and Hyundai owners to park in the garage, use equipment to lock the steering wheel or disable the engine when not in use, if possible.

The automakers have agreed to an estimated $200 million class action legal settlement, which could cover up to 9 million vehicle owners whose vehicles have been stolen to help cover their out-of-pocket losses.
